We spend a lot of time tracking real-life filming locations but sometimes we wonder what it would be like to hang out in our favorite fictional towns, too.
Below is a list of TV towns we want to visit.
Stars Hollow, Connecticut
Stars Hollow is the idyllic town Rory and Lorelai Gilmore called home on Gilmore Girls. The eccentric townies and small town charm were the heart of the series. In real-life, most of the exteriors for show were filmed on the Warner Brothers lot in Hollywood.
In Hart of Dixie, Zoe Hart arrives in her father’s hometown of Bluebell from New York City and quickly finds her place among the locals. And, here’s a fun fact about HOD, it is currently using the same village green at Warner Brothers that was once Stars Hollow!
Who didn’t wish they could just row a boat across the bay to their best friend/secret crush’s house just like Joey did in pretty much every early episode of Dawson’s Creek. But, though the show was set in Massachusetts, it was actually filmed in Wilmington, N.C.
Tree Hill, North Carolina
Speaking of Wilmington, the second most popular show to ever shoot in the North Carolina city was probably One Tree Hill. If you watch both shows closely you’ll see some overlap between Tree Hill and Capeside. We love both shows so much that it inspired us to make the pilgrimage to Wilmington earlier this year.
Charming, the fictional Northern California town where Son of Anarchy is set, might not seem as safe and idyllic as some of the others on the list but it would have its advantages. The first being that part of the motivation of SOA throughout the series has been to keep their little town safe and, more importantly, you might get the occasional glimpse of a shirtless Jax Teller! In reality, Sons of Anarchy is filmed entirely in and around Los Angeles.
Mystic Falls, Virginia
Mystic Falls might look like the perfect town but anyone who watches The Vampire Diaries knows there are plenty of supernatural forces in play at any given moment. Like Charming, the greatest benefit of visiting Mystic Falls might be its residents. We certainly wouldn’t mind bumping into the Salvatore brothers on the street! Many of the exterior locations in the show, like the Town Square and the Mystic Grill, are actually located in Covington, GA.
As far as risky towns go, Sunnydale has to be near the top of the list. As much as we would have loved to have gone to high school in Capeside, we wouldn’t be so eagar to enroll at Sunnydale High which is situated right on top of a portal that attracts evil forces. That’s not to say to we wouldn’t want to hang out with Buffy The Vampire Slayer for at least a few days, but maybe it would be a bit safer to just check out some of the show’s real filming locations throughout Los Angeles.
Ah, Dillon, TX, where life is all about high school football and the drama that ensues because of it. Who didn’t watch Friday Night Lights and fantasize about being up in the stands, or out on the field. In reality the show’s field house and football field were filmed at Del Valle Field, in Del Valle, Texas, just outside of Austin.
Veronica Mars was never a fan of the “09ers” she was surrounded by in her hometown of Neptune, California but we can’t help be drawn to the town’s southern California sunshine. We also wholeheartedly believe we would have been bffs with Veronica and Wallace in high school. The show was filmed in and around San Diego and during our last trip to Comic-Con we made sure to pay a few of VM’s old haunts a visit.
Long before John Corbett was romancing Carrie on Sex and the City he was a simple small town DJ in Cicely. Many of our readers might not remember the early 90’s TV series, Northern Exposure, which first introduced the world to life in the 49th state. The appeal of Cicely wasn’t its remote location but its community spirit. Despite the differences between the town’s retired astronaut, big city doctor, kindhearted bar owner, and feminist pilot, they all supported each other. Many fans of the series still make the trip to Roslyn, WA today to see where the show’s exteriors were shot.
